Alexander L’Estrange, English choral composer and arranger of international acclaim visited Churcher’s College on Friday 29 June to run a fantastic workshop to help prepare our Junior and Senior Choirs ahead of their performance on Monday of Alexander’s very own “Zimbe! Come sing the songs of Africa!” at their Grand Summer Concert at Cadogan Hall in London.
Alexander said:
“From the moment I walked into the Assembly Hall I was struck by the energy, talent and focus of the Churcher’s students. Zimbe, a celebration of singing African music and jazz, sounded wonderful – big thanks to Mrs Purchase and the other staff for preparing so well – and it was a privilege to have a couple of hours working with the choir and band. Groove, communication, physicality, smiles – even some choreography! – all improved as the morning went on and I’m sure the concert at Cadogan Hall will be a huge success! I would love to come back and work with Churcher’s on another piece very soon.”
Alexander not only helped to direct the choir as to how best to perform the piece, but also gave them a fascinating insight into the stories and inspirations behind it.
One thing is for sure, he has certainly passed on that inspiration to our pupils, leaving them positive and energised ahead of their performance.
