3rd Year pupils enjoyed a fantastic trip to Fort Nelson and the D-Day Story museum in Portsmouth.

At Fort Nelson, the pupils were imaginatively transported back to the First World War era by a Sergeant Major and Nurse in full costume and character. There were excellent workshops on the weapons used in WWI where pupils handled grenades, rifles and the Vicker's machine gun. The nurse took us to a dressing station workshop and she explained injuries such as trench foot and gas attacks. We also heard some of the story of George, a young soldier who was trained at Fort Nelson before being deployed to the Western Front. George miraculously survived the war and his descendants still visit the Fort today. The guide emphasised that this relatively happy story was the exception and not the rule.

At the D-Day Story museum, pupils were immersed in the history of this key turning point of the Second World War. They explored a genuine landing craft, took part in a quiz on the incredible D-Day overlord embroidery, and toured the museum.

It all consolidated the World War topics they have been studying this year, but above all gave them an understanding of the tragedy of war and how we can learn lessons for the future.
