This week we enjoyed the imaginative and captivating outdoor performances of our First, Second and Third Year actors in the Lower School Production of Arabian Nights. Featuring bright jewel colours, harem trousers and multiple scarves to set the Middle East scene, nearly 70 pupils (and a puppet) took us on a journey to Arabia offering a chance to escape and feel transported to a different time and place.
The inclement weather for this outdoor production did not dampen the spirits of the children as they weaved through Arabian Nights’ six stories; The Story of Ali Baba; The Story of the Little Beggar; The Story of Es-Sindibad the Sailor; How Abu-Hassan Broke Wind; The Story of the Wife Who Wouldn’t Eat; and the Story of the Envious Sisters.
The audience’s reactions were of laughter, astonishment and wonder at this delightful production.
Director and Drama Teacher, Ruth Northey, explains the challenges of putting on a production in a pandemic:
“Our rehearsals began online, often without cameras on, meaning we focussed on the storyline and vocal skills. When we returned to the classroom, we blocked at lightning speed to make up for lost time, but the students had to wear face masks and I just had to hope their facial expressions matched their wonderful voices.
“Once masks could be removed, we still had to rehearse at a distance hoping that restrictions may have lifted in time for the performances. This was not to be, but we persevered and the show went on. The children proved that anything is possible with commitment, creativity and determination and I am very proud of them all - both on stage and behind the scenes.”
