Westminster Abbey Recreated

A stunning scale replica of Westminster Abbey constructed entirely from Lego, was on display at Churcher’s last term.

It took six hours to build, is made up of around 200,000 to 250,000 bricks and, contrary to the belief of some, includes no glue whatsoever.

Originally constructed in 2011 by Mr Cree, a Churcher’s College music teacher, and friends, the idea was to build something with the “wow” factor which would commemorate the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Furthermore, it ended up sitting in the aisle of the real Westminster Abbey on the day of the Royal Wedding itself!

In addition to the extraordinary detail of the architecture, the model also included lego guardsmen and lego figures representing Kate and William exchanging their vows.

Tony Ostersen – Head of Religion & Philosophy – was instrumental in bringing the Abbey to the College and in the audio clip below, recorded for Petersfield Radio, he talks more about this fascinating project.
