We work to the ASA Learn to Swim Programme which are divided into progressive stages and make up the core national syllabus of learning to swim. They are designed to reward your child for their development of the essential aquatic skills they need to be confident, competent and safe in the water.
Each of the Stages 1-7 have a list of clear outcomes that need to be completed in order to progress to the next level and all children will be continually assessed throughout the term. At the end of each term your child will be presented with a Certificate of Achievement with feedback from their coach or if they have achieved their stage they will be presented with an ASA certificate and badge.
Each of the ASA Learn to Swim Stage 1-7 Awards have a list of clear outcomes that need to completed.
Stage 1
Your child will develop basic movement skills, water confidence and safety awareness. They will also develop confidence and be introduced to movement sequences for a distance of 5 meters with/without aids, equipment or support.
Stage 2
Your child will develop safe entries to the water and will continue to practice floating, travel and rotation in the water. Your child will also develop further water confidence in order to travel 10-15m on their front or back without aids, equipment or support.
Stage 3
Your child will work towards being able to swim 20m on their front and back, and will be able to swim underwater to collect objects from the bottom of the pool. They will also develop rotation skills and water safety knowledge.
Stage 4
Your child will focus on refining kicking techniques for all four strokes and develop a better understanding of buoyancy, whilst also developing front crawl and backcrawl over a distance of 25-50m.
Stage 5
Your child will focus on swimming all four strokes to the Swim England expected standards. Swimmers will also develop skills in sculling, treading water and complete rotation.
Stage 6
Your child will focus on developing effective swimming skills including co-ordinated breathing, water safety and an understanding of how to prepare for exercise.
Please click here for further information on the ASA stages.
The lessons are held in our beautiful 25m x 13m pool offering a range of shallow to deep water swimming with competitive diving blocks for the more advanced. We have tiered seating for spectators which provides a good view of the whole pool.
Our team of enthusiastic, experienced and fully qualified instructors and lifeguards are led by our Head Coach Kerri Bartram. They make our lessons exciting, enjoyable and the team are committed to ensuring each child reaches their maximum potential. The coaches will spend time making sure your child is ready before moving on to the next stage.
Pool Location: Churcher's College, Ramshill, Petersfield GU31 4AS.
- There is plenty of seating for spectators. We ask that you remove your shoes when entering the pool area. Please note that photography is not permitted and that mobile phones are not to be used in the changing rooms. Please note that parents are not required to be in the pool with their child.
- Parking -the site can get very busy at times so please do allow time to park. As you enter the school gates, drive round to the right as there is plenty of parking available. Please do not park on the netball court even if the gate is open and please do not park in the minibus bays. For those who attend swimming on Saturday, please park in the Herne School Car Park in Love Lane which is a short walk to the pool along a footpath. As the school site is so busy on Saturday's with fixtures and lots of coaches, this will make things much easier for you and is very easy to walk to the pool. The address is Herne School, Love Lane, Petersfield GU31 4BP.
- Please use the changing rooms to get changed at the end of the session rather than changing pool side. Please refrain from using the all-accessible changing room unless necessary. As a reminder, if you have to assist your child in the changing room, please use the changing room suitable for the adult e.g., a male adult with a female child must use the male changing room. We recommend that all children over the age of 8 should change independently.
- All shoes should be removed before entering poolside. There are shoe racks available or place them in your bags.
- The teachers have back-to-back lessons, so please email [email protected] with any queries you may have or questions you would like to ask the teachers.
- The swimmers are required to wear swimming costumes/shorts. Wet suits swimming movement, so advise against them. For any new starters, please collect a swim hat from the box if you would like one. We recommend that swimmers wear a hat, but do understand that some children are not keen. Long hair will need to be tied back. Please bring your own goggles. Armbands are not required and children will be provided with floats and woggles as required.
- When you arrive at the pool, please sign in using the iPad at the entrance. If you are running late or there is a queue, you can sign in once your child has started their lesson. There is no requirement to sign out as this happens automatically at the end of the evening.
- If your child has moved up a group, certificates and badges will be ready for collection from the folder on the table by the entrance (they are in alphabetical order by surname).
