15 Geography students plus Mrs Trent and Mr Nighy attended a lecture at the Midhurst Society on 21 November delivered by Dr Peter Davis of the British Antarctic Survey. Peter is an OC and was recognised in the 2023 TIME100 annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME Magazine.
Peter spoke on the importance of Antarctica to global climate, the science of ice shelves and ice instability, the challenges of undertaking fieldwork in extreme isolation and cold, and the findings of his research into the water column conditions and behaviour below the Thwaites Glacier in Western Antarctica.
This was an excellent and very well-delivered lecture, striking the difficult balance between geographic interest, technical explanation and audience accessibility. Staff and students left the hall awed and inspired.
