Two Year 6 children have received prizes for their work during the school's online Black History Day during lockdown.

The Margaret Wilson Award, run by Liphook Community Magazine, was awarded to Emilia and Howie who took up the challenge to design, make and test “space capsules” to look at how they could slow them down to enable a safe landing.

This work was inspired by Katherine Johnson’s work, with the children researching her life to draw on her positive attitude to scientific learning despite the challenges she encountered as a black woman working for NASA in the 1950s and '60s.

Emilia conducted various tests, some from a great height, recorded her results and drew a great conclusion from her studies. She was inspired by the work of Katherine Johnson and discussed it further on her return to school. The judges were impressed with both the rigour of her scientific testing, the recording of her results, development and conclusion as well as the positive impression Katherine Johnson made on her.

Howie is also a prize winner. He impressed the judges in the way he developed his parachute as a response to the online activity and the efforts he took to record his results. Additionally, he worked with his younger sister on this task at home during lockdown and supported her learning.

Well done to Emilia and Howie!
