Amazing result! We are super proud of our Lower Sixth team which has been awarded the silver medal second place overall in this year’s STEM challenge run by SATRO.

To reach the finals, the team had to win in the qualifying rounds against a dozen other schools. Points were awarded to the teams who could effectively design and build a model that would gently lower a cargo of sweets from a free-standing tower, taking as close to ten seconds as possible for maximum marks. The Lower Sixth team managed to come as runners up with a sturdy model that worked exceptionally well. The finals were due to take place in Surrey in March but due to the Coronavirus lockdown the national winners were calculated based on the results of the various qualifying heats.

“Each year Churcher’s sends several teams with boys and girls from Second Year to Sixth Form,” explains Dr Richard Whittle, STEAM and Physics Teacher at Churcher’s College. “We have a strong track record at the competition and the silver place medal this year is very special indeed. Huge congratulations to all the pupils who took part!”

SATRO is an educational charity and social enterprise which has been working with young people in Surrey. SATRO provides real-life experience of all aspects of the working world, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) through a diverse and challenging range of programmes.
