Sixth Form students from Churcher’s, Godalming Sixth Form College and Reading Blue Coat School were treated to an instructive and engaging lecture on the French Revolutionary Directory by Professor David Andress of the University of Portsmouth.

The talk highlighted the unpredictable nature of politics, and the way in which cunning figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte and Paul Barras were able to exploit moments of crisis in order to advance their own careers.

The talk left a very strong impression on the students and in the Q and A session afterwards, they asked pertinent questions regarding the attempts by the Directory to establish a stable form of government after the turmoil of the Terror.

Everyone enjoyed the cake, needless to say!
