Junior pupils were beyond excited to welcome best-selling children's author Maz Evans into school on Tuesday 21 March 2023.
The day started with a wonderful assembly introducing everyone to Maz World, which includes amazing characters such as Vi Spy, Scarlett Fife and Elliot Hooper.
Afterwards, Maz met the children in smaller groups for a Q&A session. It was brilliant to hear about the process of writing a book and the emphasis on editing your own work. The children loved all of the funny little stories Maz had about disasters when writing, as well as the inspirations she has taken from them as well. It turns out the two main secrets to great story-writing is to choose to write about a subject you love and know lots about (or research well) as well as remembering that great stories come from excellent planning.
It was also inspiring to learn about the need for resilience with writing (one of our 5 R's) and that sometimes an idea for a book doesn't always go to plan or you need to be disciplined in sitting down and writing a certain number of words per day.
The final flourish was a chance to get your book signed by Maz herself and, of course, to ask a last cheeky question as well!
Maz said, "It was a delight to visit Churcher's today and meet so many lovely staff and students. I'm so happy to see such a strong culture of reading for pleasure embedded in the school and it was a pleasure to spend time with you all."
It was clear that the children were very inspired, as following her visit, every one of Maz's books were quickly checked out from the library and a waiting list started for who can borrow them next.
A big thank you to Maz for coming to see us.
