Churcher's College Sixth Formers have been learning all about driving safety as part of the Safe Drive Stay Alive initiative.
Last term pupils attended the Safe Drive Stay Alive Tour in Southampton and this term, on Wednesday 18th March, Chris Collins from Hampshire County Council’s Road Safety Team came into Ramshill to give the Sixth Formers an opportunity to try a VR headset, which simulates being in a car crash.
It was a great opportunity to remind students of the key messages from the Safe Drive Stay Alive presentation in November (which all Lower Sixth students attend) . This event gives a hard-hitting message about the dangers of bad driving, with 17-24 year olds particularly at risk from involvement in traffic accidents. The students participated enthusiastically with the headsets and we look forward to welcoming Chris again in the future.
Safe Drive Stay Alive is produced by a road safety partnership including Thames Valley & Hampshire Police forces, local councils, and emergency services. Each partner has been working for years to reduce the number of people dying on the roads and by the end of this year we will have welcomed over 220,000 young people through the doors of a Safe Drive presentation. The good news is that since 2004 the number of under 25’s killed in car crashes has fallen by nearly three quarters, but there is still more to do.
Through a combination of roads policing, road safety education, engineering measures and speed enforcement, Thames Valley and Hampshire areas have seen road casualties who were killed or seriously injured fall to an all time low by the end of 2013. However, a disproportionate number of these remain young, inexperienced drivers and sometimes they don’t help themselves.
The Safe Drive Stay Alive campaign reaches new and pre-drivers in an emotive and hard-hitting way, influencing behavior and attitude on the roads.
