Geography Trip to Iceland

A fissure eruption at Grindavik wasn’t going to stop 31 intrepid Geography students visiting Iceland over 4 days in the Easter holidays.

This incredible country put on quite a show for us. From the approach at Reykjavík where we could see the eruption, the land of fire and ice continued to display its power. Glacier-topped volcanoes lined the sky, and students were treated to another rare event, a snow blizzard at Reynisfjara which, combined with the black volcanic sand and basalt columns, seemed to switch the world into black and white.

Colour was brought back to everyone’s cheeks with a visit to the Secret Lagoon, fed by natural hot springs – although not all were brave enough to tackle the rather bracing walk around the pool in –10°C.

Finally, on our last night, we were shown the most elusive of Iceland's natural wonders: the Northern Lights, an experience I am sure they will remember forever.
