Fifth Year student Zhara took home the title of Best Chairperson in the national final of the English Speaking Union’s Public Speaking competition at Cambridge University in early May.
The team, comprising Zhara, Jessie and Thomas beat off competition from 1500 schools taking part in regional heats across the country, to make it down to the final six teams, having won through in the semi-final during the morning session at Churchill College.
Jessie gave an emotive and engaging speech, which gained high praise from the judges, on the topic: ‘Sometimes sorry is not enough’, and Thomas impressed with his thought-provoking questions to two speakers from other schools. Zhara controlled the proceedings, with much confidence, in her role as Chairperson.
It was a close-fought final, with the judges taking a long time to make a decision as to who would be national champions. Congratulations to Ibstock Place School in London who emerged the eventual winners bringing the competition, which began in September, to a close.
Well done to the Churcher’s team for such a tremendous accomplishment, and many thanks to our committed supporters who travelled all the way to Cambridge with us.
