This term the Music Department at Churcher's Senior School has been running a Desert Island Discs extra-curricular activity, which takes its name from the famous BBC Radio 4 programme, now in its 79th year.
The Churcher’s version is an opportunity for the dozen or so staff and students who meet online each Wednesday lunchtime to share their favourite pieces of music. Needless to say, there’s been an eclectic programme so far, ranging from Elton John to Hubert Parry and Nirvana to Tchaikovsky.
One of the weekly highlights is the ‘mystery guest’ slot which features a piece chosen by a member of staff not present in the meeting, followed by an audio recording of them talking (with surprising passion!) about their musical choice. Memorable quotes include Mr Knowles talking about ‘Battery’ by Metallica (“a golden era in my life when metal and rugby were all that life was about”) and Mrs Herrington’s passion for ‘Dignity’ by Deacon Blue (“for the three and a half minutes the song lasts, I’m 15 again, singing my heart out with not a care in the world!”).
Desert Island Discs is a great way to spend time during lunch and the opportunity to hear something new every week is guaranteed.
